about

'Bell Culture' is the result of a month-long artist residency, conducted by Ilia Rogatchevski, at St John on Bethnal Green, London in September 2015. Expressing a particular interest in how sound can influence our experience of environments, the artist employed various sounds from inside and outside the church, painting an intimate portrait of the historic building.

'Belfry Ambience' muses on John Cage's idea of silence as a non-entity, while highlighting the physicality of the church belfry by recycling its ambience back onto itself. 'Church Walkthrough' invites the listener on an exploration of the church's remaining rooms and 'Stretched Bells' echoes the digital clock that controls St John's three bells by stretching and modulating their chimes.
